Frequently asked questions
Yes, and this is exactly who Specode is built for. You describe what you need in plain English ("I need a patient intake form with insurance verification") and the AI builds it, asking clarifying questions as it goes.
Most general app builders treat healthcare as an afterthought. HIPAA compliance is either a paid add-on, a checklist you handle yourself, or simply not supported. Specode is built exclusively for healthcare from the ground up. Compliance is structural, not bolted on: encryption, audit logs, and access controls are generated into every app automatically. The component library is healthcare-specific: video visits, EHR integrations, pharmacy connections, clinical questionnaires — not repurposed generic UI blocks. You also get a team of healthcare technology and compliance experts, not just a tool. And you own the code with no lock-in, on a standard portable codebase your own developers can take over at any point.
The core backend hosting BAA is signed directly with Convex when you are ready to go live. Once you complete a penetration test (additional $3k one-time cost), Specode signs a platform BAA as well. Depending on your app's integrations (telehealth, messaging, labs, etc.), you may need additional BAAs with third-party services. The Specode team helps identify which ones apply to your specific setup.
Yes. Specode supports building AI-powered clinical features including decision support questionnaires, adaptive follow-up logic, and AI-generated summaries, all designed so a clinician reviews and approves output before it's acted on. The platform is deliberate about this: AI assists and organises, it doesn't replace clinical judgment. If your use case involves diagnostic conclusions or treatment recommendations, the Specode team will work with you on how to scope and frame those features responsibly within your app's workflows.
Consent forms and e-signatures can be built directly into your patient-facing workflows. Specode generates the screens, capture logic, and timestamped audit records needed to demonstrate that consent was properly obtained. For situations requiring legally binding e-signatures, such as procedure consents or research authorisations, the platform can integrate with compliant e-signature services. The Specode team will advise on the right approach based on your specific clinical and regulatory context.
You own it outright. The full codebase is yours to export at any time. There are no proprietary dependencies that lock you into the platform. Many teams build their initial product on Specode, then bring development in-house as they scale, handing off the GitHub repo to their own engineers.
Yes. Specode supports integrations with EHR/EMR systems (including Epic and Cerner), lab platforms, pharmacy networks, insurance verification services, and custom APIs or webhooks. You describe the integration you need and the AI guides you through the setup, it's not a manual configuration exercise.
Your production app goes offline when you cancel, but your code doesn't disappear, you can export the full repository before cancelling and self-host it independently with no ongoing Specode fees. Pro is month-to-month, so there's no long-term commitment.
Yes! Specode is designed to make migration straightforward. We scan your existing codebase and map out your pages, data models, and authentication, then rebuild your app on our HIPAA-compliant infrastructure so you keep the features you've already built without starting from scratch. Common platforms we migrate from include Lovable, Bolt, Replit, and custom React or Next.js projects hosted on non-compliant infrastructure. Learn more in our migration guide.
